Don't know which Country you are in Starburst - I'm in the UK
I believe the idea is that by having Summer Time, as opposed to Greenwich Mean Time, during the summer months, we can extend the length of the useful day.
During World War II, we had not only Summer Time, but also Double Summer Time; this meant that the clocks were forward two hours during the summer.
The advantage of this Was to benefit the farming industry - Land Girls and the few able-bodied men left to work the farms had two extra hours of daylight at the beginning of the day to pull in as much food as possible to feed this Country.
The further North you live, the more you benefit from this "messing with the clocks".
During the late 60's/early 70's we had the very unpopular experiment of leaving the clocks on Summer Time - the Scots nearly had a French-style Revolution (!) and here in the Midlands, we hated it. You went to work in the dark, children went to school in the dark, and you came home in the dark. It was getting on for 10.0 a.m. in this neck of the woods before it was properly light in the middle of December.
With clocks going back to GMT at least we saw some daylight on the way to work and the children no longer needed to be dressed in white with fluorescent arm and body bands in the hope that commuting motorists would see them and manage not to knock them down as they crossed roads.
Some London businessmen have been campaigning for years to stick with Summer Time "to keep us in line with the French", forgetting that there are different time zones across France and Europe anyway.

Mainly b/c businesses lobbied for it so there would be more daylight after work for people to shop.

As soon as anyone tells you it was for farmers, you can safely ignore their answer.

If you find out, will you please let me know? Oh, how I wish we could just leave the damn clocks alone. An hour ahead or an hour back, I don't care. But make up your minds once and for all and then leave them alone now, and forever more. Amen.
