I have a 97 S-10 also.
All you have to do is plug in the analyzer, turn the key, and it will give a code the corresponds to the problem.

There is something wrong with your emissions system. Go to an auto parts store and have the codes read for free. You can also get one of those GM code keys from Autozone and you can read it yourself just make sure you have the code book to find out what the code means. There are many things it could be and by getting the code you will eliminate all others. You wrote that you tried the Oxygen sensor and gas cap. But there is also your catalytic converter, map sensor, EGR valve and more. Your truck is not burning clean for some reason go and find out for free at an Autozone. Best of Luck!

(Check Engine Light)
There are many components that work together in the engine to maintain optimal engine performance and economy.
A service engine soon, or check engine light indicates that there is a sensor that is reading a condition that is "out of range".
Simply resetting the light does not solve the initial cause of the problem.
Replacing a number of parts trying to troubleshoot the problem in the hopes of getting the light to stay off is a tremendous waste of time and money.
The simplest, and most economical way to alleviate your issue, is to have an engine diagnostic done by a reputable shop to determine what caused the computer to signal you to begin with. Just reading the computer codes may not find the "cause".
That being said, if per-chance you feel the need to reset the light in the hopes that it was a "glitch" of some kind, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes to clear the check engine light. (ignition key turned on)

The oxygen censor is the most likely cause of your light. You will more than likely have three oxygen censors. One on each exhaust manifold and one after the catylitic converter. The best advise I can give you is to take it to a good shop and have your truck scanned. A trouble code scanner will tell you which censor is bad.

i've got had quite a few S-10s and infrequently the examine engine easy will come on, seems that at th time, the exhaust as against gasses ratio is off for slightly... Then it corrects itself...i might'nt difficulty approximately it and additionally you will consistently wait till you will have the vehicle serviced and function the codes examine then... a working laptop or workstation test ought to tell you what the difficulty is... and a diagnostic test ought to be loose in case you restore it on the shop.... locate one that supplies this provider...that's takes little or no attempt to do a diagnostic examine...

Have you changed any exhaust components, if you have this could be part of the problem. IF you added duels or a free flow muffler the computer recognizes this change, as abnormal, and indicates with check engine light.

I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOUR GET YOU VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED TO FIND OUT JUST WHAT THE PROBLEM IS FIRST SO THEN YOU WILL HAVE SOME IDEA WHAT IS WRONG AS WELL AS WHAT TO EXPECT.
TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR ANY CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE PERSONAL SERVICE THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE.

The error codes tell the repair technician what diagnostic procedures to follow to fix the problem.
