About A Boy Theme

"One of the major themes of "About a Boy" is the nature of love and the necessity of living for more than yourself. Fiona and especially Marcus serve as examples of sacrificial love and devotion.
Other themes such as the damage done by divorce, the difficulty of single parenting, children’s need for fathers and the brutality of bullying are raised as well and receive similarly stimulating treatment."

As for "how could it possibly change someone's life", well, you never know what might change a person's life. It could be a book or a movie; it could be love or friendship; it could be war and death.
Or it could be something seemingly trivial to the rest of us, but something that strikes a chord within one particular individual.
So, whether or not a book can change someone's life depends more on the person than on the book.
