I make my living growing crops and poultry on a 9 acre farm. I sell what i raise direct to the customer at farmers markets, via on-line sales, to restaurants, locally owned health food stores and co-ops and from my farm stand. I also used to sell via a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).

I could also sell to a broker/wholesaler but make more money doing my own marketing and price setting

Lots of places! Depends on what you want to grow. Some stores will buy like Jewel/Osco. Normally you contract before the planting season. OR You could raise specialty crops or livestock and sell to smaller health food stores. Most of the time with the small stores, you may end up using them to sell your product on a percentage basis. They don't pay till it sells. Or just run adds for home grown healthy foods. It's a very lucrative market for beef. If you raise steroid free beef, it's quite easy to sell 5 or 10 cattle at $5 to $10 dollars per lb. It just depends on whether you feel you want to have a hands on type of sales or just sell the whole nine yards at once for whole sale prices.

Most small sized operations use the Farmers Market. Many people shop them due to the freshness and no additives to the products.
