For the uninitiated, "slider turtles" are the small, green and yellow ones commonly seen in pet stores. Most such turtles rarely live over a year in captivity, so consider yourself lucky! Most veterinarians do not have the expertise to deal with such, and probably wouldn't bother with them if they did (the turtles cost start around $5 each in the US, so it isn't worth the vet's time or your expense).

FYI: Some communities are banning the sale of these species, because disposed, living ones have become a nuisance in those environments.

Take it to a vet right away!! or go to http://www.redearslider.com/forum and sign up there and ask this question. People there are experts and have been studying turtles for over 50 years. PLEASE HURRY AND GO THERE....people here really dont know anything about turtles and they will tell you all the wrong information....trust me...that happened to me before i found that GREAT wonderful helpful site.
Your turtle really needs to have a basking area and a UVB and UVA bulb lighting it up, thats why your turtle has soft shell. Soft shell kills turtles. You also need to be giving it the right kind of vitamins and all that kind of stuff.
PLEASE go to the site and look through the pages on the right care for your turtle. And please ask the people on the forum this question and they will tell you exactly what to do. HURRY!!

Do you have a UVB light and heat lamp for his to bask under? You need to. It sounds like, due to the condition of his shell, a UVB issue.
UVB bulps are lambs that replica the sunlight, and the heat lamb is needed because reptiles cannot generate their own body heat. Just above his landing area he should have these lambs, nowadays you can buy a heat and uvb bulb in one, so they take up less room.
Read some articles on the site I have uncluded in the references :)
If I were you I would still take him the the vet(Open up the phone book, call around tomorrow since its sunday. Banfield, the animal hospital at Petsmarts normally caters to reptiles I think.), but do get him a heat/uvb lamb ASAP, Petco and Petsmart sells them both.
