Anyone who disagreed with him was "taken care of". Jail, shot, torture, whatever worked. Hopefully whomever ends up in charge will use peaceful measures to govern instead of ruling like a tyrant. Ultimately, that will be up to the people to decide what is and what is not acceptable behavior.

Though Hussein did horrible things to anyone that spoke out against his rule, the majority of those that didn't led relatively peaceful lives. Hussein typically kept a tight rein on Islamic extremism in Iraq because he knew it would be a threat to his rule. Without his totalitarian rule, Iraq has devolved into sectarian violence and terrorist attacks. If the Iraqi government can get a true democracy going, things will be better than ever for the Iraqi people. Until then, though, I think a lot of Iraqis are wishing for the "good, ole days of Saddam."

The answer depends on which of his own countrymen he was treating. Some, those that opposed him, were treated rather badly, imprisoned, tortured and killed. Others did very well. Women had more rights in Iraq then any other Islamic state in the middle east. They were educated and worked in even high level positions. Most Iraqis were educated under Saddam and health care was accessible and affordable during his reign. He was brutal to his enemies however, but that is pretty much par for the course in that area. Most of the severe crackdowns occurred after the Gulf War, while Iraq was under almost daily air attacks by the U.S. and Great Brittain.

He ruled with a fist of iron. People were taken away in the night, tortured and murdered without trial, and let us not forget the Kurds who were gassed in northern Iraq. Mass graves were found with hundreds of bodies within.

He wasn't a nice guy, but he DID keep the crazies under the carpet. Once the new Iraqi government truly exerts itself, life will be far better than it ever was under Saddam. But the real key to peace there is to teach the children there that islam is not supposed to be about killing. It may or may not presently be a 'religion of peace', but it does have the potential of becoming one IF they can stop their own extremists.

Genocide of the Kurds. He kept order at any price. He was tried and convicted of war crimes. Then hung.

Democracy is a hard road after centuries of in fighting. But some efforts are working. If their government elected could step it up a notch it would help. Thanks.

*kids are back in school and market places are full again... life is returning to Iraq

edit: thanks above for mentioning the Gulf War, in peacetime over 4,417 brave soldier's died under Clinton's watch
