If the alternator has been replaced recently and the fault is new, then I would say there is a problem with the diode pack on the alternator. Take the car back and have it full checked out.

Hi

If I'm not mistaken, the rev counter on your Astra receives its signal from the alternator, and therefore, considering the battery light is illuminated and the rev counter is inactive, I would say you most definitely have an alternator problem, possibly a broken or slipping belt, or a loose wiring plug.

Even though its a new alternator, it too could still be faulty.

Very best regards

Geordie

Hi there,
skootch has it right!!
The rev counter works from pulse signals from the alternator, before taking your car to a garage check the rear of the alternator for loose wiring or connections possibly a blue wire!! Then have someone check the voltage when the engine is running which should be around 13.8-14.4 volts on fast idle(2000-2500rpm) If you can't see anything obvious then it looks like you need to take your car to a garage.
Good Luck.
Cheers

Check simple things first perhaps
(a) fan belt loose or frayed if temp rises could be a sign of this as well
(b) Battery cable loose at the battery
(c) alternator loose on mountings
(d) elect connections to alternator loose
(e) with voltage tester check alt outlet to voltage regulator
Good luck

two things, first you have lost the feed to the instrument cluste could be fuse or broken wire , the alternator warning light is on because there is no feed going to the alternatot and the light is on because of back feed alternator might not be charging. the other likely fault is that the wiring plug that connects to you instruments is making a bad connection. or the printed circuit behind the dash is blown, jock

Looks like one of the wires from the alternator is still disconnected. Check all the connectors between the Alternator and the fuse box.

Topping the oil up is unlikey to have brought about the faults you describe. The sensor that tells the european the engine velocity is defective and the administration mild is drawing close in keeping with this - in case you're no longer a DIY powerfuble motorist you will would desire to get a storage to repair it

Take it to a garage, it is a very simple problem which should take seconds to rectify. However if I told you here you could easily cause some expensive damage.

I realise it's probably not the answer you're looking for, but believe me, it's the cheapest.

Edit:
It will NOT harm your engine.

i would suggest that maybe the alternator belt has broke, or there is a broken/loose wire at the alternator/starter or battery. if the alternator was replaced at a garage take it back and get them to fix it. could even be a faulty alternator
