we go once or twice barefoot in the snow...Yes, this is my Cherokee Grandmothers tradition handed down from each generation. We look forward to the first soft snow that blankets the earth. We whoop and yell and sing praises unto God for the beauty of the creation of Snow. It also has been told it will immune us for the winter flu and cold season ahead. Any questions ask how we do this.,

Yes, I do, I go barefoot year-round. Wrapping up warmly from the ankle up, I can go barefoot even in the snow with rarely cold or numb toes, or pain when they warm up. Things I remember happened far more frequently when I still wore shoes, especially the rubber boots I wore riding horses were horrible for staying warm! Barefoot, I keep my circulation going since my entire foot can move (also creating a little warmth in the muscles) rather than having circulation constricted as in a tight shoe. Also I'm far more aware of how my body works in keeping itself warm. We don't get freezing weather that much but there are usually some days of snow and occasionally even a few days the temperature drops quite a bit below freezing, and my feet can deal with that.
I do take footwear along when it's freezing, just in case I get stranded somewhere and I can't get in from the cold. But I haven't needed it at all for several winters even though I have had to wait quite a while for the trains some snowy days; it's been enough to flatten the snow where I stood (so it doesn't cover the top of my foot where the skin is much thinner), wiggle my toes, and find a spot out of the cold wind to stand.
I am not worried of getting any colds; in fact quite the opposite. I used to be sickly from early fall until late spring, coughing and sneezing no matter what I tried. These past ten years I've called in sick once (for two days, and not even in winter) and even a minor cough is rare.

A lot? Well, no. Not here in the snowy midwest. If it's not too terribly cold (over 25F), I do sometimes like to walk to the end of my 200 foot driveway to retrieve the newspaper in the morning after a light snowfall, or even better, on a sunny winter day when the asphalt is warm and wet from melting snow. It's surprisingly comfortable. I still drive barefoot in the winter. Even when the car hasn't fully heated, my feet actually feel warmer faster because I feel the warm air from the heater from much sooner than I would otherwise. I usually walk to and from my garage barefoot, and leave my shoes in the car for work or shopping. A nice side benefit to this method is that bare feet carry very little snow into the car itself compared to shoes or boots, so the interior of the car stays drier and more comfortable.
I don't go barefoot anywhere else in winter, though.

Truthfully, around the house I still to do a ton. Obviously, going outside I have my socks and shoes on, but rarely inside you will even find me in socks. There really is nothing wrong with either one.
