Have you considered an external drive? You could store all your photos/music on it and keep your laptop's drive free for software. I buy Iomega external hard drives. I have a 500 GB drive that wasn't very expensive. It stores my entire iTunes library and files from my former 2 computers.

the type of hard drive matters big time. there is the ide type & the serial ata type. one wouldn't fit on the slot of the other so its best you know what you should buy.
