Awww, you sound like such a good mom! Babies develop ear infections normally soon after they've started having upper respiratory symptoms such a nasal congestion or sniffles. Keep an eye on your baby's temperature and keep doing what you're doing.
You might still want the doctor to check him out, but hopefully it's just a little itch or comfort measure he's doing.

my son did this from the day he was born..it was a comfort thing for him(that is what the dr said also). But at about 9 months, he did it while crying and we found out he wasnt teething, the fever was from an ear infection and that became self evident when his ear drum burst and all the fluid starting draining. I would have it checked out (you should have a wellness check up coming soon-9 month--sorry, i see you posted, tomorrow..you see the dr)
If it was an ear infection, he would have a runny nose and he would cry when it is time to lay down--because the fluid in the ears makes it hard to get comfy laying flat.
Good luck, and i hope it is not an ear infection---we dealt with ear infections from October thru Christmas (spent Christmas EVe in the ER last year) and then they put tubes in...such a lifesaver for baby and parents!!

If he's not crying, and only doing it when he's tired (either needs a nap or just woke up) it's probably just something he does out of comfort. I used to hold my ear when I was falling asleep....and if I am really tired, I sometimes still do it and I'm 20 years old. Lots of kids do that, and they'll continue doing it for years to come if they so choose. The only time that holding your ear is a sign of an ear infection is when they cry and pull at it. Trust me, Ear infections aren't comfortable, he'd be screaming. Just relax your son is fine.

It may just be because he's tired. Most babies if they have ear pain will tug at the ear and cry. It's always best to get the doctor to have a look, as they can see right into the ear canal and look for redness. If he is not distressed, then its probabaly not hurting him. Try not to worry. Good luck at the docs.

My daughter started doing this at about the same age. She only does it when she is tired or over stimulated. Some times she will use both hands. She holds her face, pulls her ears, and/or pulls her hair. I think it is just her way of communicating untill she gets her words. She has always been ear infection free at her dr. apointments.
Good luck, I hope it is nothing.

Hi,
It could be a ear infection, however a little boy at my school holds his ear and suckles - he is 6 and he does this when he is tired and it calms him down.
It best to be safe so take him to doctors but if not an ear infection, it probably just a comfort thing he doing.

My daughter also does this when she's tired. She's never had an ear infection either. But like mentioned above, ask the Dr to put your mind at ease.

It is normal.. and I doubt he has an ear infection. A lot of children play with their ears. My friend's daughter would play with her ears when ever she ate... I think it is just a comfort thing.
