I find I get a tiny amount extra mpg when I use super unleaded petrol but is it actually good for your car engine? If so, how (not too technical, please!).

some super and premium gas has some extra additives for your injection system but really regular has all you need. unless your car calls for premium you shouldn't need a higher octane, the octane level is just the anti knock rating in a sense and is really only necessary for a car that requires it. there is probably little to no advantage in it for a car that does not require it.

Much depends upon the compression ratio of your motor. If it's above 10.1 you actually will get more horsepower. The reason is using regular gas your car has a knock sensor which immediately reduces ignition timing if the sensor detects pre-ignition, ping or spark knocking. Fuel economy will go up slightly and the motor will run cooler. You need to math out the amount of increased fuel economy as opposed to the higher price of 93 octane fuel.
Personally I don't think the added mileage will cover the added cost of the fuel.
On the other hand there's nothing like high test when traveling on high speed interstates during hot days at varying altitudes.

you do not say what automobile, yet when that's a common "run of the mill" style all you'd be doing is squandering effective money. It gained't harm your engine. There are some engines that must have large unleaded, yet they're the better-overall performance jobs like the Evo 8 etc. except those, engines are designed to run on "cooking" unleaded those days.
