Here's a link to the "S" portion of the Catholic Encyclopedia Online. If you click on "Saints, Communion of" you'll find general information about this. Or, if you click on the names of individual saints ( with titles like Santo, Santa, San, or Saint, depending on the language), you'll learn about individual saints.

Santo and Santa are the Italian words for saint. The first is masculine and the second is feminine. The Latin for ''saint'' is either sanctus or sancta.

Santo Carolus Boromeus is Saint Charles Borromeo. (You've used his Latinised name here.) He was the Archbishop of Milan and endowed a college a Pavia. He was widely known for his personal piety and asceticism and was a reformer of many abuses within the Church and was strongly influential in the deliberations of the Council of Trent because of his influence over Pope Pius IV.

He was born in 1538 and died in 1584 and was canonised by Pope Paul V in 1610 with his feast being fixed on November 2.

I believe Santo would be a male saint and Santa is the female version.

Santo and santa is also Spanish/Latin, in addition to Italian.
Feminine/masculine for saints.

I believe santo means "Saint" or "Holy."

To become a saint, you have to have been a very extraordinary person with great faith.
