the belts didn't squeel then, but lately they squeel in cool/cold weather in the AM when first start the car. Mitsubishi Expo. What is causing this?

I don't know anything about fixing cars..just want to get an idea of what might come up when I take it in...the mechanic who fixed it said the belts were at the wrong angle but he fixed it and it should get better milage because of that. Maybe it was a little better, hard to say..

they were new when they were out on 1 year ago.

Over time and use - they will streach out and cause this.

It is as simple as loosening the alternator and tightening the belts back up.

It typically means they need to be retensioned. The sooner you get them tightened, the better, because slipping belts tend to get glazed and make the slipping all the worse. If the serpentine belt is slipping, then the tensioner needs to be replaced. On a cold start with the hood raised, you can spritz plain water on a belt with an old spray bottle.if you think it's slipping to see if the noise immediately changes. If so, that's the belt that needs tightening.

Check them for crackes/ under side wher they grip the rollers... some time apply belt dressing located at parts shops...like checker,autozone or pep boys...
