Here it is:

mrs. mahoney went shopping for some canned goods which were on sale. she bought 3 times as many cans of tomatoes as cans of peaches. the number of cans of tuna was twice the number of cans of peaches. if mrs. mahoney purchased a total of 24 cans, how many of each did she buy?

i think the equation if x = peaches, then
x times 3 + x times 2 = 24
ive tried everything and i cant reach it

please help

tomatoes = 3*peaches
t = 3p
tuna fish = 2*peaches
f = 2p

24 = tuna fish + peaches + tomatoes
24 = 2p + p + 3p
24 = 6p
24/6 = p
4 = p

she bought:
4 cans of peaches
12 cans of tomatoes
8 cans of tuna fish

you got everything right except you forgot to add the cans of peaches in to the equation.

3x+2x+x=24
instead of what you had (3x+2x=24)

3x+2x+x=24
6x=24
x=4

x = cans of peaches = 4
3x = cans of tomatoes = 3(4) = 12
2x = cans of tuna = 4(4) = 16

ok lets say:
t = cans of tomatos
p = cans of peaches
y = cans of tuna

t = 3p
y = 2p

t + p + y = 24
3p + p + 2p = 24
6p = 24
p = 4

She brought 4 cans of peaches, 12 cans of tomatoes and 8 cans of tuna.
