It is all about surface area to volume ratio. By keeping a small surface area relative to their volume, polar bears reduce heat loss from their bodies. Combined with fat layers and their colouring this helps them to lose as little heat as possible.

Although polar bears are extremely muscular, which gives them their enormous strength and swimming ability, much of the bulk that you see is made up of layers of fat and an a very thick fur. The fat and fur will help the bear to withstand the low temperatures in the Arctic.

To reduce heat loss. They keep their body surface area to a minimum. The least surface area possible for a 3D object is a sphere. The closer to spherical, the more efficient heat loss reduction.
