What does gene manipulation mean to you? Do you believe this is a good thing and caution should be thrown to the wind? Or do you subscribe to the school of thought quoting care and redundant studies ensuring that every single aspect of these applications are complete safe?

Gene manipulation to me, means that scientists are able to extract specific chromosomes to achieve the best possible outcome. I think that we should not tempt fate and distrupt nature. Good question!

Personally like any technology, gene manipulation can backfire or produce positive results. It isn't anything new really when it comes down to it. Man has been practicing selective breeding for quite some time. The only difference might be that at least with this slower method, man can see if there are serious harmful effects to the environment.

Bug resistant corn sounds great but what happens if it overtakes natural plants and environments? Do we really know the far reaching effects?

What about man's greed? Do we really have the wisdom not to shoot ourselves in the foot because it is profitable?

I'm sure that gene manipulation can be a good thing in many respects but like you suggest, studies should be used just like the drug industry to see long term impact.

It makes me uneasy, in that the long-term affects of genetic engineering have yet to be discovered. It's like other things that were deemed safe when I was growing up in the 50s-60s that have since been found to cause birth defects or cancer, etc.
You never know how safe something really is when you mess around with molecules and such that nature had put together in its own specific way.

I think we can live without gene manipulation.

Provided that you only manipulate your own genes (not your offsprings...they can make up their own mind...), then it's hard to argue with it. Peoples bodies are their own, they can do what they want to them.
