I have a 2001 Ford Ranger & a 2000 Chevy Cavalier. The clearcoat is peeling on both on the hood in the same spots, over the antifreeze reservoir and around the edges of the hood. This occurred in the last week on both; large coincidence. Anyone have a suggestion or experienced this?

I'd say heat problem/ repairs sand and have repainted? may be add a layer to area under hood additional insulation??
maybe change your themastat? too...

I am a painter and see quite a bit of that happening.In sunny hot climates it is more common.The clear breaks down over time after exposure to sunlight and heat.Unfortunately at this point there is little to do to stop it.The other areas should be waxed to prevent ultraviolet from hurting them too.This problem started when clear coat technology became standard,it was a cheaper way to get a shine.But as with other things,the federal regulations won't allow the manufacturers to use better products because of environmental reasons,leaving no choice other than using second best chemicals.

American products are built to self destruct at a certain point in their life span. This is what drives the American economy. Somewhere between 8 and 10 years the clear coat will begin to come off fast and your vehicles will begin to get what I call "that redneck warble". I just had mine repainted as they are not forcing me to buy new cars at inflated prices where greedy CEO's get $10,000 profit per vehicle on average in order to make a $30 billion salary + stock options and benefits. If more of us say no, we can force things back to a reasonable equity = just like the housing market went bust when they started asking $20 million for what was a $1 million dollar home just 4 years ago. Ride it out and make corporate America pay as the cons in the "con"gress intend to keep the poor - poor - and a class system in place at your expense and certainly not at theirs. See the wizards at Earl Scheib and give the whole flock to the salesmen and women at the car dealers the next time you pass. The single middle finger is the "bird" and the "royal" wave is giving them the whole flock of "birds". You can be like the Royals in England and say ___ you to the entire notion of exorbitant price gouging with just one wave.

get some nail (super) glue with the long nozzel on it and glue it down.. peeling of the overcoat is kinda normal on vehicles in that era chemicals like anitfreeze will do that and so will letting it sit under dripping h20

Clearcoat SUX!!

It's probably hydrogen gas and acid vapors from your battery.
