Here goes:
Both Winifred and Winston collect model helicopters. Between them they have 200. If Winifred sold Winston 50, then Winston would have 4 times as many as Winifred. How many does Winifred have.
The working out must have an algebraic thingy in it it e.g winifred could be a, and winston b, etc.

a = Winston, b = Winifred.
a+b=200
4a = b
Substitution.
5a = 200
a = 40. b = 160 (that's after he sold 50).
So, to start, Winifred has 90, Winston has 110.

It's a problem involving 2 equations.
If Winifred's model helicopters are represented X and Winston's by Y, then our first equation is
X + Y = 200
The problem states that if Winifred sold Winston 50, Winston would have 4 times as many model helicopters than Winifred. Thus,
X - 50 = 4y or Y= (X - 50) ÷ 4
Plugging our second equation into the first yields
X + (x-50) ÷ 4 = 200
Multiplying both sides by 4 gives us
4x + x - 50 = 800
5x - 50 = 800
5x = 850
X = 170 is the number of Winifred's model helicopters
We solve for Y using our value for X by substituting it in our second equation
Y = 170 - 50 ÷ 4
Y = 120 ÷ 4
Y = 30
120, our new value for X, is 4 times that of our value for Y.

Winifred = x
Winston = y
x+y = 200 (i)
(y+50) = 4(x-50)
y + 50 = 4x - 200
y = 4x - 250 (ii)
substitute (ii) into (i):
x + y = 200
x + 4x -250 = 200
5x - 250 = 200
5x = 450
x = 90
Therefore,
Winifred has 90 helicopters.
Winston has 110 helicopters.
You can see that this makes sense: If Winifred sells 50 helicopters to Winston, Winifred will have 40 helicopters and Winston will have 160 helicopters. 4*40 = 160

What is easiest is to choose a variable for One of them, say Winston has x helicopters, and then say that the other (Winifred) has 200 - x helicopters since together they have 200.
Now x + 50 would equal 4 [(200 - x) - 50] since Winston has 50 more than before and Winifred has 50 less.
x + 50 = 4(200 - x - 50)
x + 50 = 800 - 4x - 200
and you can solve for x
If you have to use two variables the equations would be, using your variables,
a + b = 200
(b + 50) = 4(a - 50)
b + 50 = 4a - 200, or 4a - b = 250
4a - b = 250
a + b = 200.....add together to get
5a = 450 and go from there

Winifred=a
Winston=b
a-b=200
b+50=4(a-50)
Solve this two equations together.

37 or 38 cause 200-50=150 then wiston would have 4 times more so winifred would have 37 0r 38
38 time 4 equal 152
37 times 4 equal 148

YES IT IS ALGEBRA
F(WINIFRED)
N(WINSTON
F+N=200
F-50=1/4(N+50)
MULTIPLY BY4
4F-200=N+50
N=4F-250
F+4F-250=200
5F=450
F=90
CHECK
90-50=40
40*4=160
40+160=200
Winifred has 90
Winston has 110
