replaced water pump & gasket. appears that water is seeping in between the water pump back housing and block

you timing cover is made out of aluminum. lack of antirust and antifreeze corrodes the crap out of aluminum. I'd advise that you change the timing chain and front seal while your in there. have fun.

Most likely either tore the gasket or it slipped on you. Redo it and while you have it off look to see if there is a crack where it mounts to the block. Also use some Permatex Gasket cement on the gasket. I usually glue it to the pump and let it sit for a minute or two to help hold the gasket in place.

When you re-gasket the waterpump make absolutely sure the block mating surface is clean as well as the water pump surface. Spray each surface with CRC Brake Clean. Coat both sides of the water pump gaskets with Permatex-blue silicone sealant. Slap it back together.

It's either not in there straight -
or
you tore the gasket putting it on.

Either way it has to be re-done.

Double check tightness of bolts? did you prepare gaskets/ with silicone sealer like (Permex) ?? or put on dry? check freeze plugs? double check Thermostat?
