It depends entirely on the school. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it is not taken into consideration at all.
For example, the UC schools (like UC Berkeley and UCLA) give no preference for legacy students. None.

It totally depends on the school, and no, that's not a "myth". I know that I got accepted into certain schools in South Carolina for my name alone, whereas I was rejected from other schools up north with much, MUCH higher acceptance rates, where my family weren't founders/alum. For many schools, if your relative is high profile and/or a successful member of the community (school promotion), and/or gives/may give money to the school, then your chances are improved quite a bit.

It's called "legacy," and it does help. Find out who was most influential to your cousins and their parents, then see if any of those people are still working at Cornell. Chances are some of them will be. Talk to them about your family and what you want to get out of your studies. If you are planning to visit the campus, get to know the professors in the department in which you choose to study. Finally, get strong letters of recommendation from your past teachers and don't be shy about showing them to faculty and administrators.
