I'm a freshman in high school and I get good grades in school. I want to become a journalist. Does anyone have any ideas on what fields I can look into and what I should study hard? Thanks

make sure you get good grades, especially this freshman year! you will be setting the base of your gpa this year.

i don't know anything about journalism, i'm just an engineer. but i did want to express the importance of doing well your freshman year (it's a year that a lot of people think doesn't matter). good luck! pursue your dreams!

English grammar and composition.

The school newspaper or year book.

Also the school radio station and if they have one TV station.

The print shop (entry level jobs are usually as COPY BOY)

History and Poly Sci (most journalism is about current affairs, although you might start out doing the Obituaries).

You DO need to fully understand Algebra and Trig as THAT is a required course in college. You HAVE to take MATH 101 and MATH 102 to get BA in ANYTHING

I'd also get a background in Earth Science, ART, Drama and Music.

You might have to cover that.

College LIKES to see these ELECTIVES

I'd be on the school NEWSPAPER each year for your entire stay and do as many jobs as you can.

One year be a music critic, another a movie critic, another cover school poltics, another do feature stories.

You might want to get a camera and take pictures as well.

A friend of mine with a BA in Journalism got one of his first jobs at the LA TIMES and he got FREE tickets to a LAkers game and took his camera and got a PHOTO in the Times with his name.

The rest of the time he was a COPY BOY or worked the NIGHT CITY EDITORS DESK talking to people who saw space aliens.

That is your introduction to Journalism!

He later went to a Pennysave type publication where he was paid $100 a week and had to work 80 hours a week.

Then he got a job as FIRST READER at Price/Stern/Sloan publishing. That a comedy publisher financed by the producer of GET SMART (Lenard Stern) and run by a hands on publisher (Mr. Sloan). He used to read all the UNSOLICITED manuscripts.

I, on the other hand, NEVER took journalism, did lousey in school, got Published in Sky and Telescope at 16 and wrote for a variety of publications.

First sale was and still is $35

Second sale was $70

I eventually make it into the hundreds.

I once sold a piece of Valley Magazine on a home brewing and wine making shoppe in the Valley and the Editor had me in.

He went from free lancing to Editor and held that job for like 5 months before being fired.

A year later I was on a jet coming home from Oakland and I opened the IN FLIGHT magazine. They pay, by the way, $1,500 to $4,000 for an article.

I don't qualify for that one as I'm in the HUNDREDS still....

What do I see.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR HIGH PAYING JOB?

It was written by the FIRED EDITOR who bought my piece!

Now, do you understand what a journaist and writer is!

He turned a termination into a $2,000+ article on free lance basis by telling WHAT HE DID after he got fired.

ONLY a writer can do this!

I'm working on a piece that might pay me $300

I go to four college libraries and photocopy materials for 30 reference sources.

I hear this girl on the other side of the stacks talking to her friend

MY HISTORY PROFESSOR WANTS ME TO HAVE 7 REFERENCES on this paper.

I laughed so hard I almost got aced from the library!

Do you understand how things work!

You're in print.

You're in the Readers Guide

People will use YOUR works as THEIR references

THAT aspect is more important than your pay.

You shouldn't have to think about this so soon. Really.I am trying to convince that to myself[I'am a junior in highschool]. Well funny,I wanted to be a journalist too but then I got in the class..lol yeah.Love it..but not for me. So I don't know if you are in it but be sure to be in a class before deciding that is what you want to do. Oh my,I hope that made since..
