don't know, it kind of depends. i'd probably go with nirvana; even if their music wasn't that influential (which it was), their style certainly influenced a lot of people, and other grunge bands like alice in chains and soundgarden never really came close to them in terms of status.
hip-hop was pretty big then as well, and the fugees basically set the template for a lot of modern r&b/hip-hop, public enemy were also quite influential
.
sadly, blink-182 have also been very influential, so many bands try to sound like them now which is slightly tragic.
in the uk, the manic street preachers, massive attack and blur were probably the three most influential, perhaps faithless as well for fusing and combining different genres.

I'm going to have to go with either "Nine Inch Nails" or "Metallica." Both bands did amazing, and distinctive, music during the 90's. ⪠â«âª â«âª

I agree with Johnny....Nirvana seems to have been the ones who started the alternative rock. They influenced many, many bands.
