Because in an attempt to be healthier we eat the meal first so we are more full when the dessert comes, so we do not have as much.

It makes sence when you think about it

Scientifically, the answer to your question is this:
Dinner was meant to have protein, fiber, and other insulin-lowering minerals. Yes, I'm sure we would be full, but desserts usually have high amounts of sugars and carbohydrates making it harder to fill you up. The dinner you had preceding the dessert should be able to stop all that sugar and carbs and slow your insulin levels from spiking. But most people eat crap for dinner, so dessert won't help at all.

Now, I also know why England eats dessert first, scientifically: Experts say that eating things high in protein at night instead of carbohydrates will help you get to sleep and have a good rest. So, eating dessert first and then getting a meal in protein and/or fiber aids you in sleeping. Having a good rest helps you in many ways. Oh, and the dinner will also slow a spike in insulin.

It's really all about what your ancestors ate.
Great question!

Interesting question. I'm American, but I thought everyone did this. It's because you eat the healthier things first to fill you up, then you have less room for the unhealthy things. How do you do this? You eat dessert first and then dinner?

One of my neighbors in Iowa always dessert first because it was a way of staving off hunger while the rest of the meal was being prepared. This way guests could enjoy the dessert and still have room for the main meal. Her custom had nothing at all to do with nutrition, but everything to do with her guests comfort.

Briana,
Isn't that what I said to begin with? Dessert by its nature is meant to be in addition to the meal - lacking in substance, and therefore supplemental. If you presume that the amount of food you can consume is finite a logical pattern emerges.

because dinner makes you full. you don't want to junk off on desert and have no room for the healthy stuff. + it stems from the whole telling kids to eat their veggies before desert. it's a health habit.
