My son wants to do his science fair project on different municipalities and their quality of water. We are trying to get information about the water supply and distribution system for northeast Illinois. I've read that over 100 suburbs get their water from the Chicago system, but I can't find a list or a map (there may be homeland security concerns with posting this information on-line). Do you know where this information is on-line (we are interested in and working on off-line sources as well)?

I live in Hoffman Estates and remember when we were hooked up to Chicago water about twenty years ago. The water quality was much better than the old local well water. The water is colder than well water and it is easier to heat lake water than cool well water. The water has uniform quality and is monitored 24/7.
I also know the extent of lake water is limited by treaties with Canada. First, the water may only flow to geographical areas where water flows back towards the lake. They also must modify the treaty when any expansion of facilities occurs.
