I enjoy coin collecting. My grandfather has always collected coins and I've recently gotten hooked. It doesn't have to cost a lot. I can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination I'm in the mood for) for exactly face value. A box of cents is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of half dollars or quarters are $500.

Once I get a box, I go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). I keep all interesting coins and try to fill holes in my coin books.

The coins that I don't want/need can be returned to the bank and put straight back into my account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that I don't end up searching the same boxes over and over). So most of my money goes back and I can then get another box.

Some things to search for: wheat cents, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, coins with an "s" mint mark - they may be proof coins etc. There's always the chance of finding a real treasure!

I collect coins and do my own appraising. I would want to know the person doing the job actually knows more than I do and is competent at his job and has references. I have collected and studied coins for so long that I know more about what I collect then the dealers. Before seeing a so called Pro do some homework on what you collect and have an Idea of values.

I've been collecting Shirley Temple dolls and collectibles as well as other dolls since I was young. I've never had them appraised, but really don't feel the need to. Ebay prices are good enough for me to see what people are paying....not that I'm selling, so it really doesn't matter.

In my youth / teens, I collected stamps and coins. Yes, they've both been appraised and are in a safety deposit box. I started because Dad gave us starter kids when we were kids, and there was no such thing as video-games.

In my LATE teens / 20's I collected comics. I sold me collection in 1999 and made a bucket of money.

Currently, I collect and build models and model railroading stuff

I would say collecting things cannot make a person happy. Collecting can bring moments of pleasure but should not be the aim of our existence. I think people that are overly obsessed with collecting are trying to fill up something missing in their life with things. Unless a person believes in something bigger than himself he will feel empty. I think a lot of being happy is deciding to have a happy attitude . Only you can control your reaction to things that happen in life. No one can make you feel a certain way. You choose to feel the way you feel. That does not mean that we are not predisposed to react in a certain way but we can sill decide how to feel if we think before acting.
