How much would a trip from Virginia to San Diego cost?

I recently did this trip in April, 2007. Trans Air was the best I could find. $784 round trip for two. That involved a switch over in Atlanta. I actually left from Sky Harbor in Phoenix, but your costs to SD should be comparable. Check the Trans Air website because when you fly datewise will have a major impact on the cost. Also try to book 21 days in advance if possible.

Depends on how you want to go. Air fares run from $300 (US Airways) and up. Amtrak is $370 and would take just under 3 days each way. Greyhound can do it for $99 with advance purchase.
