There are a lot of questios within your question that have to be answered to give you a good answer. is your transmission manual or automatic? What exactly is the transmission doing? For example, if its a manual transmission, does the engine pick up speed (rpm) and the car not go or is there a clash when you change gears or a clutch that does not engage and won't move the car? If its an automatic, is it slipping on shifts? Is it 'banging' when it shifts gears? does the engine speed go up but the car not go anywhere?
The first thing to do is to have the fluid level and quality checked if it is an automatic transmission. if the fluid level is low it can cause all kinds of problems. You can usually get the fluid changed for under $50. If you can't remember when you did that last then start there. The quality of the fluid will tell you and the technician if there is any further diagnosis required.
If its a manual transmission, start with checking the fluid level for the clutch system. Same thing; low fluid in the clutch master cylinder can cause all kinds of engagement problems with a manual transmission.
If its not a fluid problem, then take it to a qualified technician and give him or her as much information as you can about what happens, when it happens and how you're driving the car when it does happen and, if possible, take them for a ride to show them what its doing. That way they can give you a reasonablly accurate estimate of what it will cost to repair it.
hope that helps

1991 Honda civic transmission seems to have gone out?
Has anyone had this problem and if so did you need a new transmission or just a simple fix. Hopefully under $300

Actually, if you know someone who will do the labor for you a transmission can be had for about $200.00. I you have a stick shift you should look into getting the transmission form a SI model civic or crx. Its a direct bolt in swap. It will give you way better acceleration and if you have a 4 speed it will give you a 5th gear. 5th gear= low RPM cruzing speed= even better gas mileage.

the only 5 speeds that i have seen are manuals, but depending on what is happening it could be a clutch that is worn out needing far less to get working, and no modifications.
