Beethoven wrote one opera Fidelio ... but 2 versions survive

Beethoven wrote one opera, which had a difficult history.

Beethoven wrote the three-act opera 'Leonore' in 1805. This version of the opera was opened with the overture we now know as 'Leonora No 2'. After early performances, Beethoven shortened and re-structured the opera into two acts. He re-wrote the overture slightly and this is now known as 'Leonora No 3'. He made a final revision of the opera in 1814, then renaming the opera 'Fidelio' and writing a shorter, lighter, taughter overture (the one we know simply as 'Fidelio'). The overture known as 'Leonora No 1' was actually the first to be written and was intended for the 1805 première. However Beethoven was unhappy with it and wrote 'Leonora No 2' to replace it. 'Leonora No 1' was never performed during Beethoven's lifetime.

Beethoven wrote one opera Fidelio but re- wrote the overture twice so we have Leonora numbers 1, 2 & 3. Leonora number 3, brilliant, was featured in a film with Ralph Richardson and Gina Lollobrigida called A Woman Of Straw.

Only one "Fidelio", although there are a couple of different versions of the overture of the work which was originally called "Leonore."

Beethoven never wrote any operas. This was not his 'cup of tea', so to speak.
