It's expanding in all directions, and will continue to do so until gravity just balances the expansion. At that point the universe will begin to contract leading ultimately to the big crunch, where all the mass in the universe is concentrated in an infinitely small point. This will cause another Big Bang. We have an oscillating universe.
No need to worry about it as it will take at least 15 billion years by which time the sun will have burnt out and the earth reduced to a sterile lump of rock.

I'll say this: if the universe is infinitely big, then the answer is simply that it isn't expanding into anything; instead, what is happening is that every region of the universe, every distance between every pair of galaxies, is being "stretched", but the overall size of the universe was infinitely big to begin with and continues to remain infinitely big as time goes on, so the universe's size doesn't change, and therefore it doesn't expand into anything. If, on the other hand, the universe has a finite size, then it may be legitimate to claim that there is something "outside of the universe" that the universe is expanding into.

The average Radius vector of the Universe was roughly calculated to be about 15 billion light years of distance.
That is the distance where mass structure exists. However it is more likely that is only one third of the actual size of the Finite Universal containment. That means that the Size of the Universe is a lot bigger than what Cosmologists figure out to be.
There fore if a Galaxy expands its radius vector in order to maintain Gravitational Energy equilibrium it has ample room and time to expand into. However it doesnot mean that it would continually expand forever. It does so only to maintain equilibrium,it can also decrease its radius vector as well.
If the Universe is a finte entity as Prof. Albert Einstein proved in this theory of General Relativity it must have a definite containment .So no mass structure would leave that containment, that would also include the micromasses of light
.
Our Creator Constructed a Universe with a set Volume and dimensions with Constrains in order to cause all motion of mass structures.
See The Biblical record of Creation for the General details of Creation of the whole Universe..It does not match the present Big Bang theory of Creation. However the Big Bang theory does offer some very good Insights how mass can be structured. But in reality Unless scientists were there at the time of creation ,there is no positive proof concerning how the mechanisms of Creation actually took place.

I think this is a really good question and I don't think there is a definite answer...
The universe is expanding jig is only a theory put forward by smart space guys...but the theory is based on this - galaxies could be constantly moving away from each other. The property of gravity is that objects with a mass attract other objects, larger the mass, larger the attraction. As galaxies move away from each other, the attraction between them also decreases.
I too love these theories about the universe...i mean its the next big thing isnt it?
I read this really good book from Stephen Hawking called 'A history of time'. If you are a science person try reading it...I'm sure it'll enlighten you more on the universe and give you some insight into how vast and numerous the universe theories are.
Hope it helped...

The universe is expanding alright. It all started by the big bang theory. Right now the universe's space is spreading out so fast and will eventually, go reverse and compress everything back down. I've read about this theory and watched videos. It sounds too amazing to believe. I hope this helps a little.

The universe is all that exists (Synonyms: cosmos, everything, macrocosm, natural world, nature, world), it does not expand into something but the galaxies move apart and space itself expands.
Consider the surface of a balloon-blow the balloon up and the volume expands into more 3D space but the surface doesn't expand into more 2D space yet still grows larger. Put dots on the balloon to represent galaxies and the move apart but the dots themseves do not move.

For me when we say the universe is expanding, that only means the the knowledge of men regarding the universe is enlarging due to inventions of modern telescopes and from the knowledge gained through space explorations.

They mean that the matter is expanding. More and more energy is turning into matter.
