When I gave birth to my daughter I tore bad and got stitched up worng. Not to mention that I suffer from celoid(don't know how to spell it) scaring and got it down there. 21 months later I now have a very sore, very tight, very thickly healed perinium. I'm 15 weeks pregnant and have been told that I should have an epistiotomy because if I was allowed to tear naturaly I might just shatter(nice huh?) I want to hear from others that have had an epistiotomy. Did it hurt at the time? How did you heal and time it took? And when did they perform it? Any information will be greatful. Thankyou

Yep, had a very poorly done episiotomy with my first child, many years ago. Done at a military dependents hospital, so it wasn't like they were real attentive. Healed very badly, with infected sutures, (they used silver nitrate to remove dead tissue), and keloid scarring. It was very uncomfortable, especially after it healed, because the skin was stretched tight and it pulled and hurt. Even that many years back, though, with my second child, they made the episiotomy along the same line and removed the scar tissue and repaired the incision line, all at the time of delivery. Talk to your OB/GYN about repairing the site when this child is born. If they are not agreeable (or noncommital), remember.....there are many excellent cosmetic surgeons, and correcting poorly healed scar tissues is just one of the things they do well.

An episiotomy is done when the babys head is crowning if there is a chance of a tear. You probably won't feel it and the suturing is done with a local anaesthetic so you won't feel that either, anway you will have your baby in your arms and won't care! It doesn't take long to heal and the sutures normally disolve on their own.

episiotomy is much better than tearing. When I got mine it was right before she crowned. they gave me a local shot and then just snipped it. after labor was through they sewed it up, just like if it was ripped. but the cut was much smaller and it healed in just a few weeks. the stitches were dissovable, so the stitches went away on their own.

I had one with my first pregnancy. The baby was about to crown and they cut me and that was it. I didn't even know what they were doing and it didn't hurt me at all. Too be honest I don't think it was all bad but I am sure you will hear lots of horror stories. Just relax and all will be ok. Good luck!!
