As you state Essex and the Isle of White I guess you are from the UK.

I find what you say very odd as we do not invite people to become Freemasons. You need to express an interest to join normally to a friend or family member who is a Freemason. It is also normal practice for you to attend social events held by the lodge so you can get to meet some of the Brethren and they can get to know who you are prior to joining.

It may be a good idea to find out if this is a regular masonic lodge recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England - http://www.ugle.org.uk/provinces/lodges/hlodges.htm - this site lists all the UK lodges that are under the UGLE.

As another answerer has said there are a lot of " clandestine " aka non - recognized Masonic Lodges which do exist.

Suggest if you are really interested in joining the Masonic Fraternity you contact a man whom you know to be a Mason and ask for a petition. You might want to contact the Grand Lodge of Masons for the State in which you reside to be certain they are
" a recognized and legal " Masonic Lodge.

When a man is interested in joining the Masonic Fraternity he contacts a man whom he knows is a Mason for a petition. This petition must be signed by 2 members of the Masonic Lodge the person wishes to join. The petition is given to one of the Members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodges next stated meeting when the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee to interview the petitioner in person. After the investigation the committee will report back to Lodge at the following stated meeting when the members present will vote on the petitioner. Once accepted the petitioner becomes a candidate and is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. There are certain requirements which the candidate must meet before proceeding from one degree to the next.

A man must be of good moral character and in acceptable physical condition. He must have a Belief in a Supreme Being.

The tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. "

One must have been raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before being allowed to wear any Masonic jewelry.

very odd... freemasons do not invite people to join. did you express an interest or fill out a petition?

what is the name of the Lodge? there are a lot of clandestine or bogus lodges out there that call themselves mason/freemason and some of them solicit members, but they are not part of the regular and recognized freemason fraternity.
