Pendulum dowsing started with ancient peoples' affinity to mysticism -- primitive cave drawings of a man dowsing with a twig have been dated to be 8,000 years old.

The ancient Egyptians provide the first recorded evidence of using a pendulum and they used them as a means of spiritual healing -- the same as we do today.

The ability to dowse is mainly associated with finding water or in mining exploration.

It is said to be a useful medium for testing food, locating lost objects, missing persons / pets, spirituality information, and personal decision making.

On a higher plane, pendulum dowsing is said to bring about psychic awakening to acquire knowledge beyond the scope of the normal human senses.

For more on the subject, the site below offers in-depth knowledge and a practical course.

Yes you can use a pendulum or dowsing rods to detect subtle changes in your environment.

There are several books on Dowsing. The dowsing book by Richard Webster immediately leaps to mind.

A pendulum does not need to be an expensive or ornate tool.

A piece of thread tied to a key will work.

My personal favorite is a briolette (SP) bead on a piece of thread. The weight is evenly distributed, and nicely balanced.

Since I am clairsentient; I can feel the subtle changes with my hands. I just carry a pendulum so other people with me can use a pendulum to confirm my findings.

A pendulum gets very interesting in a haunted house ;-)

Pendulums, like dowsing, are too subjective a tool to be used to measure or find anything. Any movement can be caused by the ideomotor effect.

Also, what makes you think a pendulum can be used to find anything? If so, how do you calibrate it to find the correct thing? I've heard of people using pendulums to find gold, oil, water, dead people, etc.

Google or find a book about dowsing.

There are more of them than I can even remember the titles of, and all of them are full of information that I have found helpful.

You could also just get in tune with the sensitive side of your being and leave off the whole pendulum deal. That's what I do, and it gives me more information than a pendulum can.
