Has to be the television, on a serious function level, it can communicate visual messages to everyone all over the world, and on another level, it must be the one thing that has entertained every houselhold for literally hundreds of hours every year

I would have to say the airplane - it has changed the way we live. It made travel and international commerce much more viable, and gave birth to space exploration etc. Plus we got movies like top gun from it.
