The most underrated NBA basketball player is Caron Butler.
This guy plays D, rebounds, steals, scores occasionally assist. He can make the 3 ball too. No one cares much about him though with Arenas on the Wizards. Same situation as when he was in LA with Kobe.
The most overrated NBA basketball player is Steve Nash.
He's basically a liability on the defensive end. But I have to admit that his offense is good. Unfortunately, basketball is played on both ends of the floor.

The most underrated NBA basketball player is Tracy Mcgrady. People have this wildly obsurd idea that just because he can't win in playoffs(mostly not his fault) that people will a far less collection of skills like Dwayne wade, Ray Allen, and LeBron are better than him. This guy cand do absolutely anything with a basketball and he is an automatic mismatch at 6'8". He can shoot from ANYWHERE, pass, has really good ball handling, can rebound, slightly above average free throw shooter, and can score at will in so many different ways.
The most overrated NBA basketball player is Steve Nash. He doesn't do anything besides what other point guards can do in his position. His assists are only that high because of the freaks on that team. He is almost always open, and his teamates are the ones that allow him to make those pretty passes. Put another top notch point guard in his position like Baron Davis, Chris Paul, J-Kidd, etc. and they would be able to do the same job if not better.

The most underrated NBA player is Shawn Marion. He is the glue that holds the Suns together. He does all the little things that don't get much attention as well as the big things like rebounds and points. His dunks are amazing as is he defense. He is an all around talented player and does not get the credit he deserves.
The most overrated player is Lebron James. He panics in the important games and loses his touch. He has been dubbed "king" and "the chosen one" yet has not done anything more exceptional then many of the other NBA players including Marion. When Lebron was in Phoenix last season he would do his fancy dunks and would be all cocky and excited and Marion would do an even better dunk the very next play to shut him down. It was so fun.

I know Yao Ming is good but people are expecting him to be the MVP.

underrated: Raymond Felton. He leads the league in assists. Felton will have a monster season this year. Watch out Steve Nash.
overrated: Dwight Howard. All of his baskets are tip ins and layups. He's very talented but is raw and hasn't improved much. Shooting less than 50% from the free throw line doesn't help either.

Overated: Kobe Bryant because he only plays hard when he feels like it as well as defense.
Steve Nash because well he isn't the best point guard in the league he maybe able to do two things well pass, hit a free throw, and occasionally make an open 3, but beyond that he turns the ball over way too much and can't play D!
Underrated: Jason Kidd, Deron Williams, Baron Davis, Tony Parker, and Chris Bosh

Overrated: Jamaal Crawford. So he made 16 field goal in a row... still has a low field goal percentage and high turnover rate.
Underrated: Deron Williams... except everyone knows hes one of the best pg right now. I would go with TJ Ford is very underrated too

Why the **** are all of you hating on ******* steve nash? Have any of you seen him play? He is ******* amazing. Ever read about how hard he had to work to get in the NBA coming out of Canada? If anything steve nash is underrated.
