i want to decorate a big wooden shelf in my living room..any ideas...or sites??

It's hard to know what to do with something when you can't see it. You should have some ideas of what you like and want. It should be something that pleases you. What does the rest of the room look like? You want it to blend with the room.
If the shelf is battered looking. Why not sand it down and put a stain on it that matches the wood in the room? Then put a urethane coating over it. You can get the glossy or not glossy look. I like the glossy coating. I put some on a re-done bookcase of mine.

What will be the purpose of the shelf be; after the fact? How much of this "Decorating" will actually show? Will your design fit in with, or look abstract in the balance of the room?

Certainly this is as personal as many other choices one makes individually; no offense; but you'll get various opinions here. What might suit me; may not work for you.

Other considerations such as what do YOU like in the form of decorating; IE: Accessories. Do you want the shelf to be the "showcase" piece? OR what you put on the shelf? What style of furniture or other decorations already exist?

Like the others said, it's difficult to give you good direction without more information, like what style is your living room, what other types of patterns do you already have, etc.

One nice look is having the backs of the shelves painted the same color as the walls - makes it almost seem like a built in. If you do have any type of fabric pattern already in the room, you can choose a stencil based on that. Whether its vines or flowers, or a simple rope-twist edging keeping the theme consistent with what you already have in there will keep the room looking more put-together.
