They're making crunching noises, almost like someone walking on snow, first the left one then the right, about every second - why are they doing this?!

It could be that your sound board is going out. Or try updaing the video card drivers, works for some people.

Well you didn't say what your speakers were hooked up to, but it could be your volume or balance control switch getting dirty, with power OFF rotate the knobs back and forth a few times and then turn power back ON and see if that helped any, if so then a spray type cleaner might help you even more.

The wiring could be loose. Does it happen more if you move the speakers? Either way they are probably wearing out and you should just look into getting new speakers.
