My boyfriend accidentally downloaded a virus/spyware program on to his computer. It is one of those where it says you have spyware and pops up with "buy this product to remove it" and it is even popping up with false IE and Microsoft security bubbles. He does have McAfee 12 in 1 protection and even went out and bought this Spyware Sweeper program but it isn't seeming to help at all. When he clicks on the site, the product name is Online Security Center 7.1. The bad thing is, not only is hard to search for in search engines (because I'm getting real spyware prevention things) but it is blocking some sites like the McAfee support and links that tell him how to get it off. If anyone can help me out, we'd greatly appreciate it. He could always reformat completely but he has a lot of stuff he doesn't want to lose.

Currently the most effective way to remove spyware and adware infections is to use one of the many spyware protective software programs.
A good anti spyware/adware program will do 3 things that will clean your computer and then keep it clean. It will scan your computer to discover where the problem is, then it will run through and completely remove spyware from your system and then it will run on your computer in the background, defending you against future spyware attacks.

Spyware is a program with the main objective of monitoring users activities. But it can also steal private information, install unwanted

software, redirect browsers to other websites than the ones the user wants to visit or even displays advertisements.

You are infected with spyware if:

* You see too much pop-up advertisements.
* Your browser has toolbars that you haven't installed.
* Your homepage has changed (and you can't change it back).
* Other settings have changed without your permission.
* Your computer is slow.

To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you have to use an antispyware or even more.

To remove spyware,I recommend XoftSpy Se.
XoftSpy Se Features:
*Remove Spyware, Adware
*Stop Pop-ups
*Kill Trojans, Worms, Viruses
*Clean Registry & Program Errors
*Remove harmful registry keys and files
*Speed-Up your computer
*Destroy harmful hijackers
*Helps prevent identity theft
*Clean & Optimize your PC

Finally, Make sure you have 1 or 2 spyware remover programs installed on your computer and 1 antivirus and also 1 firewall.

GOOD LUCK!

Nasty little persistent things............these can be a real pain to get shed of.

First of all, don't click on those pop-ups any further.
I'd suggest use of TrendSecure's HijackThis to get a handle on the problem. Then turn off System Restore, and turn back on again- this will remove the infected restore points that could reactivate things like that later on. Go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and look over the list of programs. Delete any you find that don't belong there, checking the name of each online if your not sure what it is; a lot of these adwares will place programs/files that will keep re-invading your system unless they are all gone. Check that your registry and start-up file has been cleared of all references, too.

Tighten up your security levels in your Internet browser settings and add use of an anti-spyware & adware programs.

That sounds to me to most likely be a smitfraud infection. Download the smitfraudfix and Superantispyware. Run the smitfraudfix first to remove the infection, then run Superantispyware in safe mode to remove any miscellaneous malware that the infection brought in with it.
