It must be some form of character flaw, I guess.... It's hard to say... let me ask my girlfriend... she'll know why...

Ahhh GEM ... this is the story of my life. You can throw intelligence in there as well. They are intimidated because their "manhood" is threatened. Many people have told me I am pretty, however, I am also tall, strong, determined, and educated. So many men cannot handle that at all. They feel inferior and don't want to be ridiculed by their buddies that their female partner is more intelligent, successful, etc... Some men have this old fashioned need to "control" a woman - it gives them a macho feeling of power.
It is hard for a man like this to change so your sister is in a tough spot. If he is controlling or intimidating her - that is no way to live and she should "exit - stage left!" I do feel that men are beginning to change their old fashioned thought processes, however. I see more and more men that are mature and humble enough to allow their partner to truly be their "better half" without all the hang ups. At least this gives me some hope personally because I WILL NOT settle for the alternative.
Men like your brother in law need to understand it's not about a woman trying to be "better than" or "stronger than" them. It's about us living in an age where we can truly chase our dreams and use all of our God given capacities to make them come true! If a guy has a problem with that ... then they don't deserve women like us in the first place! =)
Peace ...

It's not so much intimidation for me, as it is annoyance. If someone knows what they are talking about, it comes through. It's all about HOW it comes through. I have respect for anyone who knows what they're talking about.
Assertive differs from determination. Determination can be a quiet strength, whereas Assertiveness can be blunt and an overwhelming. If the assertiveness is not based on principles, but rather, a person's ego, then I have no time for them. A woman, more times than not, demonstrates assertiveness based on wanting to be heard or taken seriously rather than the subject matter at hand. It works both ways though... there are guys that are idiots as well. JMHO

Can't speak for all men, but I know that I'm not.
I'd rather know women like that instead of weak ones too sensitive for their own good.
Looks like your brother-in-law needs a new pair of balls...

Because they have low self esteem and want to appear dominant. Today's society needs to treat women equally in every sense. If they compete against a man, and are superior, then they should prevail.

Insecurity and low self-esteem. I used to date a guy like that, and I cant' believe I stayed with him as long as I did! Thank goodness that my husband is one of those great men who admire that quality in a woman.

my ex has that disorder too. he actually told me once i could take nursing classes, but could not work.
he also told me when i did get a job that my place was at home taking care of him and the kids. i worked part time and did all the cooking, cleaning, took the kids to the things they had to go to and never had a "headache" if you get my drift.
i think pegasus is correct and add to that they want to be the boss.

They feel a little "insecure" due to their "upbringing". They will learn some day, that there is nothing wrong with that !!!
