Robert D: the first internet activity using telnet and arpanet was in already in progress in the late 70's.... dimbulb....

Think: unique. A DVD player is based on many different technologies and is actually a hybrid product but not an invention

The same goes for cell phones. They're just another type of phone. BTW the original phone actually was an invention.

Everything mentioned so far is based DIRECTLY on something which was already in existance. That just makes it an update or upgrade product, but certainly not an original invention.

Viagra... don't you remember "salt peeter"?
Cholea hearing insertion.... if it's still a hearing aid forget it. An implant under the skin that would restore perfect hearing and wasn't another auditory enhancer (hearing aid)... That would be a true invention
Electric car? Kidding right? Been around forever!
Johnnie S's response doesn't deserve comment because it's so very lame.... complicated sounding, but very lame. Sorry.

Recombinant DNA techniques. The discovery that genes can be activated and deactivated even after they're present in one's genome, and that some of these changes can be passed down to descendants. Automated gene mapping equipment and techniques that have led to the mapping of the human genome.

Use of quantum physics to both build smaller and faster chips and to vastly increase the storage capacity and speed of hard disks. Fast Wi-Fi.

Or, on a more practical side, the engineering of hydrogen fuel cells that are efficient, and may be a key to stopping global warming. The development of white LEDs, which may replace inefficient tungsten light bulbs (and even, eventually, fluorescent bulbs).

It may be a stretch to call it an 'invention,' but the development of the search engine, exemplified by Google (sorry Yahoo), has fundamentally changed the world. It has even changed the way we use our brains - we don't seem to need to actually remember things as much, as long as we can remember enough to search for it, either in our own databases or on the Web. I think we have to say that the internet is older than that, though.

We are on the cusp of learning how to reverse engineer our stem cells, as well, which will revolutionize medicine. Care to grow a new liver, if your old one was cancerous? Regrow the spinal cord so a quadriplegic can live again? Insert insulin-producing cells into the body, so diabetics are completely cured? Perhaps cure Parkinson's, or epilepsy?

Stop aging?
