How can I pass my music Exam ?
I need Help here, I am taking grade 8 Abrsm practical exam next year and need tips on practising...and tips on how to answer questions like chords and cadence and modulation for aural,
and scales and arppegios.
Sight Reading and Aural.
I ve read that for Aural , you need to listen to as much music as possible, but how do you define how much is as much ?IF you just listen to one particular composer ?
anyone has takin this exam and passed with disctinction ? please

You need to structure your practice. You need to play a lot of scales, arpeggios and studies in as many keys as you can. This can be tiresome and boring but trains your fingers as to where the notes are.

You should practise slowly as well, so you can listen hard to what you are playing and make adjustments to your intonation, phrasing etc before taking the piece at the proper speed. Yuo should always listen as hard as you can to what you are playing and be your own harshest critic.

If you want to be a serious musician you should always listen to as much music as you can - and not just the 'popular' pieces. One very good reason for listening to a piece of music is because you've never heard it before. This will help you recognise individual composers' styles and your knowledge and appreciation of music in general. For the other part of your aural, you will have to practise that. Ask your teacher to play chords and help you recognise them. Learn what the individual intervals sound like so that you know instantly what the interval between any two notes is. This will enable you to take down melodies when they're played to you. After all a meoldy is just a string of intervals when you break it down. You can't expect to be able to do this instantly, however and you need to practise a lot before you become good at it.

I practiced 2 hours twice a day.As I was useless at sight reading I bought lots of sight reading books starting at grade 5,also playing hymns helped as you must read four notes at once.

The ear tests are difficult-I didnt have a teacher for this so I listened to the tapes from Abrsm every day to gain a "good fail" in this section.

Listening to different composers?-to help with period questions,I think that only carried 1 point?I would concentrate on pieces,scales and sight reading-if you do well in these you can afford to lose a little in the Aural.
