I do not know about being on this forum, but certainly those who have been active in political demonstrations against government policies. I know that my ASIO file goes back to before I even joined a political party back in 1966, in fact it goes back to my father's file. The same with my Aust. Federal Police special branch file and my fathers. Similarly with the Victorian Police Special Branch file, although they are supposed to have been destroyed.
The fact that I was also a journalist/newsman and also that I went overseas as such, also meant that I had several ASIO/AFP files, whether the same or seperate I do not know.

Perhaps this is going to sound silly but , in the world of communication, there is no guarantee of safe communication,
As this one topic I chose during my education a few years ago on the 1990' ever wonder about how safe a mobile phone is , your phone transmits over the airwaves and can be intercepted , without you really knowing about it,
When you hear of a bank saying that they have the best security even today with computer's none can actually say that they are safe the only way to be 100 % is to turn everything off even unpluging the modem line from the wall socket and the power to the computer.
With computers they leave a signal which in fact is like your signature when you write it down and that is one way big brother is can track some one .
To give an example just suppose you recieve an email and you open it just by opening it if you don't know the person who it is from can lead to your computer being controlled from a distant country and everything and anything can and sometime do place thing on your computer, even to delete your operating software and you would not even know about, that is why it pays to be behind a firewall even 3, possible 5, and have the best that money can by Internet Sucurity and aniti virus Software before you go online.

You're not paranoid at all, Jenny. I'm sure that all of us have an ASIO file, and the yanks would be monitoring us as well, you can be sure of that. They have search engines that look for particular words and phrases. We only have as much freedom as they allow us to have.
Don't forget that the Stasi in East Germany had the entire population under surveillance, and they didn't even have current technology.
Also remember the Victorian Special Branch? They were disbanded some years back and told to destroy their files, but I heard that they did no such thing.
Anyone who's been in a demonstration will know they've been photographed.

I have no proof at all other than what I read and intuit, but certainly these boards are monitored by one organization or another - whether government or not, it really doesn't matter anymore because many govt services including security have been outsourced, even to business that are foreign-owned (Israeli-owned is what I've most recently read about).
Some questions I have asked here and other places, particularly with religion-related issues, have been almost bombarded with immediate responses - all nearly identical in argument - which indicates that questions and the message boards are being monitored... And they are organized!! Not just a single pencil-pushing "geek" as you put it, but a well-funded, most likely right-wing/quasi-fascist fundamentalist groups who would gladly do violence, verbal and physical, if and when given the chance.
It is all becoming a horribly twisted world - but being somewhat self-sacrificial in this regard, I think as long as WE keep talking, keep maintaining our stance against the privacy intrusion, doing collective actions and sharing the violent absurdities that THEY inflict on us (and soon, themselves - after all, their moral and economic basis is self-devouring...)) we can watch their self destruction.
There is survival in variability... WE outnumber them, simple as that. Freedom, overall, is far greater than the powers of suppression. Their reason for being is simply too narrow - except for the big factors and that is POWER... military and economic power, which right now, they have enormous quantities of. Collectively they are powerful, individually they collapse quickly - like any human does.
Stick together. Find your friends and make yourselves into better friends. Do small subversive activities, and start now...
They have been subverting our Constitution, our economic systems, our language, our basis for freedoms for years now. I started to see this during the early Reagan years - 25 years now, and their benefits are really coming to fruition, but we can see, almost everyday how horribly corrupt THEY are both morally and financially.
Lastly, it surprises me that there hasn't been some type of military rebellion against this administration, yet.

EDITED to say: Re the 'root' servers. A couple of years ago they talked about this in newspapers and magazines when there was some sort of orchestrated attack on these root servers. Apparently several are connected to or through the US Department of Defence, so the security issues are substantial. From what was written at that time it is obvious that the internet is just that ~ 'inter', and all interconnected through these root servers, or at least that these root servers form the basis for some connection. That may not be correct in a technical sense, but I have talked to technical people about this in the past, and they say there are connections and systems which make tracking what we do on the internet fairly easy for anyone with the right know-how. I've posted a couple of links (sorry, one is to Wikipedia, but this is old stuff now so finding references was not that easy). Of course, with the way things change in cyber land, this may be old hat by now, but if so, the 'powers that be' will have come up with something else, I'm sure.
~*~*~*~
Well, people who marched in demonstrations back in the 1960s had files on them, so in theory it's entirely possible.
There is no privacy on the internet, despite the seeming anonymity and the apparent inability of police forces to trace cyber criminals.
There are only 13 'root' servers in the whole world, and they would be quite routinely monitored, I would think. If they weren't, someone would be slipping up big time!
Most of the time, the only thing between us and the 'powers that be' are a maze of impractical and probably unenforceable privacy laws and the sheer volume of this sort of electronic chatter.
But I don't think we have too much to worry about ~ police and security forces are looking for criminals, not chatterboxes!
Seriously ~ cyber eavesdropping would have to be one of the worst ever jobs, when you think about it ... imagine the boredom of ploughing through all this stuff day after day if you are not interested!
Well, if they are keeping files on us, that will be their punishment, lol.
Cheers :-)

I have heard it might be possible but highly unlikely that this is the case. It would require too much effort to collect all the information that is required. We are not as controlled as the US is at the moment and I hope we never are. This is still a relatively free country and we are free to express those views no matter what they may be. The truth is no organization or government is ever really in complete control of anything

Whoa, Whoa.
Do you realise how many people it would take to do that? Check each E-Mail.
Sure they can program in Keywords Such as, Mr,Sheen, Howard, Trakkies ,Ass**le etc, But it would take hundreds of people to trace it. I would not worry too much as all information is sent /received via the net. With the system we have in Australia, We will all be dead by the time they receive the information as it is that slow. Hellen Coonan is always 12 months behind anyway.

every time you write words that have some reference to political parties or terrorists etc the American government immediately check out where it came from.
Hahahha, imagine now, the CIA are watching not only me but you too.
Hello.... smile for the camera.....maybe just give them the bird, dont bother with the smile........ha
I dont know if the ASIO keep track of all of this sort of stuff but it wouldf not surprise me if they are watching all of us here that have been putting sh!t on the Howard government.
I reckon the exclusive bretheren are watching me too after i put sh!t on them too the other week.
Who else have i been throwing sh!t at on here......
I am more concerened about what the bretheren freaks would do to me than what the ASIO would do.
anyway...... never think about things beyond your control.....go kevin07

Nah, not really. This is just how Australians talk - we diss the government with creative vernacular, constantly. There would thousands of forums packed with comments on the Aussie election issues just like the ones here. Computer geek spies would be cracking down on millions of people... not really practicable. They would be more likely to be focused on the forums of activist groups. Not bother with ordinary Joes like us who like to go blaaaaah on the computer to any other ordinary Joes who'd bother to listen - we're not organising a demonstration from here and we're not important ;)
