Democracy is encouraged throughout the world. We cannot go into a country like we did in Iraq and force them to create a new form of government, like we have been doing. Maybe it does work for us. It didn't for Russia when they dropped their former government.
They became so independent on their own Communist government they didn't and, after all these years, still don't know how to handle themselves.
In a poll taken by National Geographic a few years ago, the Russians themselves were in dismay at Democracy. They've become so dependent on Communism they actually wanted it back.
They are slowly coming around to democracy, one day, it may work for them but, in the meantime, let me ask this, "do we have a right to force another country to take our form of government?"

This is what I have learned.
Democracy is not a one size fits all system.
Some places in the world it simply will not work.
While it can work somewhat, it will result in a lot of bloodshed and decades to even make it remotely work.
That is because of the culture of those area's and countries. Along with deep resentments within those cultures. I hate to put it this way, but it takes a mature society that is beyond that for democracy to work affectively.
Therefore, after seeing the failure of democracy in our two wars, I am no longer for installing a democratic system, but rather let the countries decide for themselves.
If one wants to argue that democracy is working in Iraq and Afghanistan, consider that Iraq has terrible problems that will probably result in civil war, and Afghanistan government only rules the capital, the rest is run by warlords.
Two facts to ponder:
One,
the USA has never gone to war to install democracy, we have gone to war to defend it. Democracy was only a byproduct.
Two,
prior to WWII there were less then a dozen democracies of various forms in the world, now their are over 80 true democracies. Democracy was doing pretty well on its own. I'd say, with our two invasions, and installing democracy out of the barrel of a gun, that we've set democracy back, not forward. I mean really, who in the hell would want our form of democracy?
Peace
Jim

Some Pakistanis want democracy as we know it, but other more militant areas don't.. There is a lot of corruption and politicians are often acting in their own interests... We in UK do encourage democracy there... It is the people in Pakistan that are the problem..

some countries need to be controlled with a firm hand, im sorry to say Pakistan is one of them, military rule suits the country.....jus goes to show not every country wants or needs a western style democracy, (which may sound great on paper)

After the people spoke in Palestine and elected Hamas, letting the people choose hasn't worked out so well. Islam and democracy just doesn't work. The only form of government that seems to work in Egypt, Jordan etc. is a dictatorship.
People will only elect the govenrment they are ready for.

There is a video tape of a Muslim threatening the father of a UK Labour candidate simply because he encourages people to vote.

Maybe it's double standards. Anyway, since Musharaff took control there, there it less tension with India, so something good came out of this.
