Of course they are. If everyone was brutally honest all the time, we'd all have hurt feelings or be in deep trouble. I don't particularly want someone to look at one of my paintings and tell me that they think it's absolutely horrible.
If a psychopath knocked on your door, brandished a knife and asked if your brother was home, would you honestly say yes?
Things like white lies act as social lubricant, otherwise we'd all be grating up against each other all the time.

Got to be pragmatic about these things. The truth can be both painful and dangerous.

On a more entertaining note, when I was young my father told me - somewhat jokingly - that lying is all right if you can get away with it and nobody gets hurt. A week later I came to him, after I had systematically cheated my way out of handing in a particular assignment on time (you should have seen the evidence I came up with - I even corrupted disks to make it look as if my computer was on the fritz), I asked him to write me a note - because, of course, though he was lying, it was to help me and neither one of us would be found out!

Sometime the truth hurts. In these cases we are tempted to go for either a "white lie" or be "economical with the truth" with a view of saving the other person some pain. What we must always consider is the long term benefit of others. Some things may hurt in the short term but by not saying them we deprive the others of information which they could use for their longer term improvement/benefit.

In my view a lie, be it white or black, is never OK. I would prefer never to lie. Rather than lie, when we are tempted to (i.e. because it may end up hurting someone) it is best to consider our words very very carefully and rather than modify "what" we say to lessen the hurt, we modify "how" we say it.

Naturally we must also ensure that the "truth" is really the truth and not simply an opinion, an impression or 2nd hand information that may be grounded in opinion/impressions. When in doubt it is generally best to say nothing.

White lies are a necessary part of life they protect your emotional state of being or your telling them to help you keep a secret you've been entrusted with. the problem is everyone has different views on what is or isn't a white lie. As far White lies being a sin hogwash your religious leaders tell white lies every time they give their sermons they may Base the sermon on an actual event, but they either put themselves in the event or someone ever one in the congregation is familiar with in it. It makes the point they are trying to instill in you that much stronger or more believable because you now know someone that was affected by that action or actions being talked about in the sermon.

Lying is not supposed to be OK. It is really really better to not to say any lies but it is not really possible... The only lies that can be acceptable is to comfort, de-stress someone in great pain or really ill. Anyway avoid lying as much as possible, regret for even the most white lie you tell. each lie you tell should make you think why I had to lie? what really is wrong with me? Am I jealous of something, am I really not pleased with my life or the surrounding people? Or are you too busy to tell the truth? (say what people would like to hear and leave you alone) what ever your white lie is, beware of the fact that when others find out about it, it will make you look like a big fat liar, people see others faults bigger than theirs...

No lie is acceptable in my opinion! A lie is a lie at the end of the day no matter it's size.
In my country, we have a saying: today you steal an egg, tomorrow you steal the whole chicken. Basically is saying today a little white lie, tomorrow a huge black one. This is how it starts. And if the person is a liar they won't change!
