GIMP is a very powerful application, originally designed for professionals. Photoshop has nearly as many functions and runs on nearly as many platforms. Photoshop is quite possibly the best for people that are used to using it or that need compatibility with service bureaus or Adobe programs and proprietary hardware ...that want an easy to use, consumer product and so on...

GIMP will do most of things anyone needs {Including people like ILM, Silicon Graphics, Sony Film, and many large and very professional companies. People with huge computer grids and clusters and so on...} You might want to look into this version if you're interested in doing motion stuff {or... you're a professional photographer}:

If you don't know either program and are willing to spend a bit of time learning either one... GIMP's a damned good bet. Of course, none of your friends will know a lot about it and everyone will keep trying to convince you that it's an inferior product.

...

Assuming HP Photoshop is something that shipped with your printer or camera... It's probably a cut down version of the original, though... if you spent a lot on the printer or camera... you may have the full version.

HP doesn't make Photoshop, which is made by Adobe corporation. You may have purchased an HP product (like a printer, scanner or camera) which may have included a pared down version of Photoshop, such as Photoshop LE, Photoshop Elements or something similar.

They all do much of the same functions, but the full version Photoshop does MUCH more, and in such a way that professionals can use in an instinctive manner, a lot like would have been done with traditional artist's and photographer's tools. That is why Photoshop has been the industry standard, practically since the beginning of computer graphics.

The differences in price will reflect the differences in functionality. Gimp is a free download (with all the associated risks of downloaded software), Photoshop Elements retails for about $100 and the full version Photoshop will cost about $700. (I found the steep price WELL worth the money because of it's time saving features, and the multiple ways to perform most of its functions.

Photoshop is a very powerful application, designed originally for professionals. It has many functions that, honestly, most amateurs don't need. The Gimp has less functions, but will do most things amateurs need. I don't know anything about HP's application, but if it is merely something thrown in with their printers, doubt if it is anything more than basic. Photoshop is the best, but the Gimp will do most things you need.

GIMP is worse since it's free. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages however.
