In sheet metal work where you need to know the width and length of a flat sheet in order to have the right size to make various types of pipe.

In any application where you want to calculate the amount of heat lost or gained through the cylinders' surface.

If one is painting a smokestack, or any other large cylinder, as an example, you want to know the surface area in order to have enough paint on hand.
You would also want to know the same figure if you were building the smokestack from bricks or even concrete. Surface are times wall thickness equals the volume of bricks or concrete you will need to order.

In making banjo bodies, you would need to know the surface area in order to cut enough sheets of thin veneer to form the laminated cylinder from.

Just a few examples.
