Read the instructions to be sure - most alarms come with clear guidelines. For example, there is an optimum height for them to be mounted on the wall.
Obviously, it may well make sense to fit the alarm in the room that has gas-fired appliances - though some manufacturers recommend you have a few around the house.
There can be problems if you mount the alarm TOO close to a boiler or heat source - again, the instructions normally give a recommended distance.

Its needs to be on the wall, not the ceiling or upstairs as carbon monoxide is heavier than air.
If you have a new boiler then you wont need one as these are known as room sealed appliance so no gas'es can escape.
Anyway you need to fix as the manufacter says but approx 1 mt from floor and 1mt from appliance.

Carbon monoxide is produced by a faulty flame, so the detector needs to be near whatever it is that has that flame - boiler, gas fire etc., depending what you have. If you're all-electric you won't have a CO problem, unless it creeps through from the neighbours.

If it is a all electric apartment you really do not need one. However to answer your question it really does not matter as long as it is not in a room that can be closed off. I have mine near the kitchen. Look a getting one that also has a gas leak detector. You can get one with a digital readout for $40 at the Home Depot that is both electric and battery.

I would say one in each bedroom at least as that is where carbon monoxide can really sneak up on you without you even knowing it.

They have to be located in an airstream, such as where the air from the heat passes, to be most effective.
