My husband wants to install security camars on our garage to watch our cars.

Since it's illegal to record people w/o their consent - what are the laws regarding this ? Can we have the security camaras ? We don't want sound on them ... just picture recording.

We live in California. Any info would be awesome !

So, we don't need to post disclaimers that people are being recorded on our property, right ?

We can post the camaras and have them recording and as long as we only use the footage to show a crime being committed - we're fine.

Any time a person is outside in public or on your property, they lose the right to privacy. You don't need their consent.

The laws regarding security camera's are simple,if and only If a crime is commited then the recorded video will be used as evidence. It is not considered an invasion of privacy because you forfeit that right the moment you commit the crime.

It goes to the "expectation of privacy". Out in the wide open, there is no expectation of privacy. If I can find the exact statute, I'll add it, but you should be fine. Just like traffic cameras, store cameras, in open public areas there is no privacy. It's illegal to record people in privacy, or to video one person and use it for gain (stars are a different story).

I thought you were watching CARS...
and it's not illegal to take someone's picture...look at all the TV news footage shot everyday.
If the cars are inside a garage, any stranger in there is a tresspasser, anyway.

If it's your property and it's out in the open, you don't need to post any disclaimers.
