Is there a significant advantage or does performance really depend on memory clock speed?

The only difference is that GDDR4 can run at a faster clock speed. So the only thing to look at is the clock speed, and of course the bit rate. If you had GDDR4 and GDDR3 at exactly the same clock speed and bit rate, the performance would be absolutely identical.

Well DDR4 will be faster then DDR3, the new nVidia 9800 will be using DDR4 memory

there are several factors in determine the performance of a gfx card.

Higher numbers imply greater importance. For example, WWI vs. WWII. But seriously, if you want better clock speeds, talk to my son Timothy in the finance department. He will hook you up.
