i have heard this is like deadly! i have only had my period for about a year and a half. i always used pads until the period i am on currently actually. this whole time i have just been using tampons except for when i'm sleeping. i'm scared that i'll get TSS from only using tampons!! Will it help if i just use tampons when the flow is heavy and then use pads towards the end when its light? cause i hate pads now that i started using tampons, they're so much more comfortable and you feel like you're not even on your period, its great! But i dont want to get TSS. How do i make sure i dont get it but at the same time still be able to stick to tampons?

i had it at 15 years old but i dunno if it's really deadly..i think that's to scare ppl. i had severe cramps LIKE I WAS DYING and I passed out and I took out the tampon right before I passed out. What happened was I wore it at 8pm. I went to bed, slept in until 11am the next morning. I had the tampon in way more than 8 hrs and the bacteria grew and started poisoning my body. After taking out the tampon and getting something to drink and eat, I was fine. Just don't go over 8 hrs.

Toxic Shock Syndrome is a rare disease. It's contracted when a tampon is left in the vagina for longer than 8 hours. Just make sure you're using a tampon that matches your absorbency needs to lessen your chances of getting it. You may also feel more comfortable switching to a brand of organic tampons like natracare. The natracare tampons are made out of 100% cotton so they don't have the risk of TSS with them. They're mainly purchased at health food stores, but you should check out their website and see if you want to try a sample. Best of luck!

OK first relax!!! You can wear tampons safely you just have to follow the directions and not wear them for too long. They say they are safe to wear for 8 hours but for me they never last that long. I try to go no more than 4 hours except at night. As for pads there is nothing worse than a 2 x 4 stuck between your legs for a week straight except for the four weeks after child birth and the Dr says no tampons. Just be sure to change regularly and don't be too worried over it TSS is really rare.

The chances of getting TSS is very small. In the United States, annual incidence is 1-2/100,000 women 15-44 years of age.

You can reduce your chances of getting toxic shock syndrome by changing your tampon frequently, at least every four to eight hours. Use the lowest absorbency tampon you can and try to alternate using tampons and sanitary napkins whenever possible.

Toxic shock syndrome can recur. People who've had it once can get it again. If you've had toxic shock syndrome or a prior serious staph or strep infection, don't use tampons.

TSS is incredibly rare and was more common when tampons were newer, and hadnt been perfected. less then a hundred cases per year are reported in all of north america. just make sure youre using the right absorbency for your flow and change it regularily and you should be fine. keep in mind if they were that dangerous, they wouldnt allow tampons to be sold.
