Interesting question.
Nationalism is more a matter of pride in one's nation.
Patriotism is a matter of duty, obligation and service.

they're pretty much the same thing, but with different connotations. patriotism is a friendlier sounding word and is tough to argue against. it belongs up there with mom's apple pie and baseball.

nationalism on the other hand can have negative connotations, it's the cause of some wars and can be at times irrational.

if you examine the root of patriotism, (the latin patria) it means "homeland or fatherland". it's this sense of family-ness where the more positive vibe you get from patriotism (as opposed to nationalism) comes from.
